Ski resort to open peak-to-peak gondola

More avid skiers could be choosing to go on Canadian holidays after one of the country's top skiing resorts opens a new record-breaking gondola.

Whistler Blackcomb, already regarded as one of Canada's top skiing resorts, is to open the new Peak to Peak Gondola, travelling between the two mountain peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb, in December 2008.

The gondola will travel 4.4 kilometres in only 11 minutes and will set world records for both length and height.

Stretching between Whistler's Roundhouse Lodge and Blackcomb's Rendezvous Lodge, the facility will give travellers easy access to the 8,171-acre skiing terrain of both mountains.

In addition, summer visitors on a Canada holiday will be able to enjoy spectacular views of glaciers and peaks and access to an expanded hiking trail on both mountains.

Whistler Blackcomb's chief operating officer Dave Brownlie said the gondola would revolutionise guests' experiences and would provide something that no other mountain resort in North America and possibly the world could offer.

He commented: "This link will effectively double, or more, the options for accessing the highest quality and greatest variety of terrain on any one day, from anywhere on the mountains."

Whistler Blackcomb was voted the best overall resort by Transworld Snowboarding magazine last year, among its other accolades.
