Toronto
In Toronto it’s hard to miss the CN Tower. Zip up the glass lift and see if you are brave enough to walk across the glass floor more than half a kilometre up in the sky. When the weather is bad in Toronto – it gets fierce winters – do what the locals do and follow the underground PATH network. It’s quite unique. As it Cabbagetown in the east of the city – it’s as interesting as it sounds.
For a total change of pace head to French-speaking Quebec. Everywhere in Canada is officially bilingual, but in Quebec it’s French all the way. Inside the town’s walls time sometimes seems to have stood still, with beautiful buildings and incredible views out over the St Lawrence River. The Fairmont hotel is said to be one of the most photographed buildings in the world – you can avoid the crowds of snappers and get an even better view of it by boarding the ferry over to Levis. You can be there and back in little more than an hour if you time things right.
Canada is a surprisingly good destination for architecture fans. Toronto is home to some extraordinary buildings and hosts many architecture tours. Daniel Libeskind’s ‘Crystal’ extension to the Royal Ontario Museum is a must-see while the city’s own Frank Gehry has transformed the nearby Art Gallery of Ontario. Quebec is also a good place for architecture fans – the Fairmont hotel tours are worth doing if you want a behind the scenes look at an incredible building.
